People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than two million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other “pests”, and the abuse of backyard dogs. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.

PlaySmart is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that helps underserved 5th through 8th grade students realize their academic and life potential through sports. PlaySmart was created in 1997 by a group of alumni from Princeton University who wanted to provide athletic opportunities to kids who would otherwise not have them. Since our inception, we have helped thousands of kids throughout the United States by introducing them to sports via sports camps, scholarships, and other activities with a sports theme. Presently, PlaySmart has operations in Denver (CO), Omaha (NE), Rye (NY), Newark (NJ), Oklahoma City (OK), Baltimore (MD), Tampa (FL) and Saint Petersburg (FL). PlaySmart is governed by a Board of Directors and is headquartered in Tampa Bay, Florida.

As socioeconomic disparities often means that certain groups of children do not have access to quality athletic and academic programming, PlaySmart works to level the playing field by offering opportunities and programming that foster positive youth development. These include:
•Branded Programs (PlaySmart Academy)
•Scholarships (support of student-athletes to further their development)
•Partnerships (mini-grants to mission similar organizations, leagues and programs)

PlaySmart has invested over one million dollars since its inception back into the communities it serves through the above strategies. Thousands of young people across the country have been impacted. In 2011, PlaySmart took a major leap forward and launched its own form of unique summer camps in three of its cities allowing for hundreds of young people to play sports and learn crucial life skills. The camp program expanded to four cities in 2012 and was rebranded and named the PlaySmart Academy. In 2013, the Academy expanded to six cities. By introducing young people to new possibilities, we hope to broaden their perspective, raise their aspirations and level the playing field for all.

Project Night Night donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year, free of charge, to
homeless children who need our childhood essentials to feel secure, cozy, ready to learn,
and significant. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-
appropriate children’s book, and a stuffed animal — all nestled inside of a new canvas tote
bag. By providing objects of reliable comfort, Project Night Night reduces trauma and
advances the emotional and cognitive well-being of the children we serve.

Every child who receives one of our Night Night Packages leaves the shelter owning a book
which encourages reading and family bonding, a security blanket which can be cuddled, and
a stuffed animal which can become a cherished friend. We have one objective – to deliver
our Night Night Packages to every homeless child in the country who needs one.

Project Night Night is a tax exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the
Internal Revenue Service code. We work with over 10,000 volunteers each year, and we are
the leading provider of nighttime comforts for homeless children.

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is a national 501(c)3 non-profit food rescue organization, operating in 16 cities and headquartered in New York City, that provides solutions to prevent excess wholesome cuisine from being wasted. RLC provides services such as food waste consulting, excess food delivery, co-branding services, and tax credit assistance.

RLC approaches the two large issues of hunger and food waste in three main ways.

  • First, we localize the issues into sets of communities that can help sustain themselves. We crowdsource the solution of the transportation to the members of the public in these communities as volunteers. After identifying the homeless shelters of a needy community, we proactively find restaurants, hotels, and catering companies with excess food in that vicinity that could help support these disadvantaged communities.
  • Second, we leverage technology to facilitate the identification and handling of excess food. Thus, partner food providers report when excess food is occurring and a web application is used to engage community members, because volunteering with us can be as easy as taking a brisk walk.
  • Third, we tackle food waste at its root, aiming to eliminate as much food waste as possible and bringing the remaining excess food to where it is needed most. The data of when food waste occurs is used in our analysis of what types of food waste could be avoided, and RLC suggests ways that partner food providers can reduce waste at its root.
