The SPCA of Westchester was founded in 1883 by Ossining resident Mary Dusenberry after she observed horses being mercilessly whipped and beaten as they trudged up nearby hills to deliver heavy loads of coal. Together with caring friends, she obtained land on which to build the Society’s first home and established a fund to be used to prevent cruelty to animals. The SPCA is still located on the same spot, making it one of the oldest landholders in Briarcliff Manor.

Originally, the SPCA of Westchester was affiliated with the ASPCA of New York City, but became an independent organization in the 1920s. Today, it is the only humane society in Westchester County empowered to enforce laws relating to animal cruelty. Despite this, the SPCA gets no federal, state, or county funds. So we rely solely on the financial support of people who care about the welfare of animals. If you care about animals, we need your help and welcome donations!

Spencer Reid Foundation is a New York Not-for-Profit Corporation created in May of 2011 after we heard the devastating news that one of our dearest and closest friends’ son had been diagnosed with leukemia. Spencer, at the age of 17 months, became one of the thousands of children diagnosed each year with this life threatening illness. His diagnosis hit us close to our hearts and opened our eyes to exactly what a family faces when their child is confronted with years of arduous treatments. Spencer’s experience has shown us that the daily joys of childhood take a back seat to the rigorous treatments and hospitalizations. Children need something to put a smile on their faces during these grueling times.

Additional stress and fear was put on Spencer’s family when his mom had to quit her job to care for him. We know that they are not alone in this battle. Many other families are in similar situations. Our hope is that we can lessen the stress that children suffer during their fight against cancer and reduce the financial burden that parents face. Parents can then focus on what really matters – putting smiles back on their children’s faces and helping them become cancer survivors!

“The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. It is supported primarily by donations raised by ALSAC. Research efforts are directed at understanding the molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic diseases in children; identifying cures for such diseases; and promoting their prevention. Research is focused specifically on cancers, some acquired and inherited immunodeficiencies, sickle cell disease, infectious diseases and genetic disorders.”

Sunrise Day Camp, for children ages 3 1/2 – 16, is the only dedicated full summer day camp in the world for children with cancer and their siblings. It is a camp designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.

There are sleepaway camps that provide a great experience during the summer months, but Sunrise offers benefits that a resident camp can’t. We can provide a true camping experience while not removing children from their familiar surroundings. Sunrise also serves to compliment the sleep away camp experience because many last only one to two weeks.

Best of all, Sunrise Day Camp is offered free of charge to all children being treated for cancer on a non-sectarian basis. By raising the needed funds from outside sources instead of charging the parents, we can help to alleviate some of the costs, and the related stress, that parents incur caring for a sick child throughout the year.

They currently have 4 camps: Wheatley Heights, NY; Pearl River, NY; & even both Beer Sheva and Yehuda, Israel. And they plan on opening 2-4 new camps in the next 12-24 months.
