How often have we all been asked this very question throughout our lives? I am sure that many of us have answered this the same way – successful, rich, smart, etc. But did you ever say you wanted to be kind? Did you ever tell people you hoped to inspire others? Have you ever daydreamed about being more charitable? Truthfully, I didn’t. I have always had a good heart and cared about others, but I would be lying if I said being charitable was on the top of my list. However, in my thirties I would like to change my answer. It is imperative for me to teach my young children what is truly important. I want to make certain that I teach my children the virtues of sharing and inspire them to do the same, especially now at their very young and impressionable ages.
It’s so difficult living in the indulgent world we all live in now. Perhaps you may feel you just can’t keep up and give your youngsters enough. Or maybe you can afford it, but are simply not willing to give into every demand for fear you will create a spoiled and unappreciative child. Are we unknowingly teaching them to want more stuff? Perhaps we are focusing less on the message of helping others or teaching our children to value the things they are given.
I would be remiss if I said that part of me wasn’t materialistic. I am not proud of this, but it is the truth. However, I always worked very hard for the things I wanted, and to be honest giving back to others makes me feel better than any pair of shoes, bag, or clothing I have ever purchased. This year I have had several opportunities to help local charities and it made me feel incredibly blessed and helped me to teach a lesson to my most important audience, my very young children.
So what do I want to be when I grow up? More inspiring to my children! And SYW is one way I hope to teach, share, and inspire them. Are you in?
